Architecture of Memory

I had the opportunity to lead a small group of students for a study abroad semester ~ giving us an extended stay in a tiny hill town in Tuscany.
In these paintings, I explore the back alleys and quiet piazzas encountered on long walks to both majestic achievements of cultural significance, and to the grocery store to get Nutella. I found myself looking up (all of Italy is uphill) and seeing the beauty of the landscape in the spaces between ~ moments glanced sideways and passed quickly, that proved as lasting in memory as trips through museums and cathedrals.
I am left with glimpses ~ a visual record of an experience both brief and lasting.
